The most commonly explored relationship in the therapy room is one with the primary caregiver, often the mother. For a daughter this may define her development as a woman, and achieving the fine balance between staying connected while individuating from her mother. This workshop focuses on conflicts in mother-daughter relationships as seen in a systemic family therapy context, and ways to help overcome the conflict, using real case examples.

Learning objectives

    • Understand theory and literature contextualising the mother-daughter relationship.
    • Explore and assimilate systemic influences on the construct.
    • Formulation of anonymised cases from actual therapy sessions.
    • Strategies to overcome conflicts and work towards healthy differentiation and transformation.

Suitable for psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, psychiatric social workers and anyone working with a psychotherapy framework. Prior knowledge of family systems therapy is not essential.
