Skills Lab – Empathic Validation

Event Date:

July 17, 2026

Event Time:

4:00 pm

Event Description

Have you wondered what empathic validation can do for your clients?
When a person brings their experience into the therapy room, what are they met with?
From establishing a therapeutic relationship to exploration of events, empathic validation seems to be the first move, where you are acknowledge the affect, understand its impact and leave the client feeling truly understood.
In this skills lab we will look at how this is done, where it breaks down and practise it together. Drawn from Mentalization Based Therapy, it is open to therapists of all backgrounds.

This Session is Intended For

  • Therapists in training (clinical psychology, counselling, psychiatry, social work)
  • Early-career therapists interested in relational approach
  • Therapists/Trainees with curiosity about MBT but no prior formal exposure

Learning Objectives

Through case scenarios, AI case simulations, live demonstrations, role-plays, and constructive feedback, you will learn to:

  • Develop a clear understanding of empathic validation and its role as the initial intervention in a session
  • Understand the process of empathic validation: how it unfolds in a session, step by step
  • Explore where empathic validation breaks down: common errors, missed moments, and the subtler pitfalls
  • Reflect on how this can be integrated into your current clinical practice, regardless of therapeutic orientation.
