Skills Lab – Navigating The Money Conversation

Event Date:

September 12, 2026

Event Time:

4:00 pm

Event Description

A fundamental step in commencing therapy is negotiating and navigating conversations around fees, sliding scale, cancellations and no-shows.

Arguably, some of the most difficult conversations in therapy can be around money, irrespective of the level of experience of the clinician. This requires a balance between retaining empathy and understanding of the client’s circumstances, while respecting your own expertise and desired standard of practice. In this skills lab we will explore strategies to achieve this balance while continuing to engage in the therapeutic process, using case based scenarios and live role play sessions in small groups.

This session is intended for

  • Therapists in training (clinical psychology, counselling, psychiatry, social work)
  • Therapists/trainees navigating private practice in a highly vigilant community
  • Early-career therapists beginning their own practice

Learning Objectives

Through case scenarios, AI case simulations, live demonstrations, role-plays, and constructive feedback, you will learn:

  • The fundamentals of planning around fees and financial structure of private practice
  • Setting boundaries and systems in place for stable and consistent engagement
  • Repair and re-engagement when finances get in the way
